James K. Cullen is a retired business executive and veteran of The Battle of The Bulge. During the second world war, as an army staff sergeant, he trained infantrymen for battle, then volunteered to go to Europe and enter the trenches himself. He was awarded four battle stars—Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, and Germany, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Belgian fourragère of 1940.Once the war ended, he returned to life as a civilian. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University on the GI Bill. Mr. Cullen has been married to the love of his life for over fifty years. He has two children, and five grandchildren. He is active in veterans' groups, including the Battle of the Bulge Group, and has participated in a reenactment of the Battle of The Bulge with a group of WWII re-enactors in Washington state. James K. Cullen is 95 years old. Band Of Strangers is his first book.

Before my review let me give some advice regarding your future purchase of this book. Buy at least four copies, and give them as gifts, tell each recipient that if they like it, they should buy some copies and share it as well. Why? Because this is the BEST first person account of the war in Europe that I have ever read in my life either for personal interest or for academic purposes. I've attended both the Army Infantry School and received a M.A. from the Naval War College and made it a point to read extensively in this area. The following is my review:The experiences of this one young man giving up a comfortable and safe stateside position to serve his nation in combat is a lesson of selfless sacrifice that we all need to remember at a time where political differences have made many forget that we are the United States of America because we have been so lucky to have the author and his brethren, his band of strangers, fight and sacrifice on behalf of all of us.If you had a family member serve in ground combat in Europe during WW2, you might have watched Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan or another Hollywood treatment of what the war was like to try to gain some understanding of your family member's experiences.We have all seen the World War Two literary canon routinely include broad strokes of unit histories with vignettes and short term focus in humanizing episodes where events impact a character and his responses become the narrative as was done in some portions of Band of Brothers. In that case, the creative license taken to educate a modern audience has been noted by historians for the loss of accuracy, the dilution of true dialouge and all at the expense of an authentic perspective from the "Dog faces" who served in combat without the glory and pay of jump wings and obviously a different set of risks.While the words of the generals and strategists have been recorded for posterity, this valuable narrative tells the true challenges of being the tip of the spear where both the environment and the enemy are seeking to end your existence.Read this book to gain an understanding of the sacrifices of the regular soldier, who through his own words, tells us of the fighting in the hedgerows, the leadership required to execute and adjust plans on a moment's notice, an "almost Christmas" in a French village, and when you close the back cover please share you book with others so that we all can further appreciate the fact that we have been blessed to have these young men serve on behalf of our country.
